The purpose of the ScreamLoop project is to collect, archive and distribute screams. It should serve as a repository of this very direct expression of human emotion. The screamloop.com website and a traveling installation will serve as the venues for collecting and distributing screams.

The Scream-Loop project was initiated as a response to the inability to communicate the urgency of human suffering. The hope of this project is to create avenues of communication that function on a visceral level. A scream is a materialization of human emotion. We scream when our bodies cannot contain our emotions and we scream to communicate the intensity of our emotion to others. What would our reality look like if we could hear the screams from Baghdad outside our window? The aim of the scream loop project is to function as a repository for our outbursts of emotion whether caused by the tragedy of war or by suburban isolation.

The screams will be recorded and archived as audio files in a database. The screamloop.com website and the installation will serve as the venues for collecting and distributing screams. The contributors will have the option of categorizing their screams according to variable and fixed criteria so that screams may be searched and grouped. There will also be the possibility of aggregating screams in order to create communal screams according to designated categories: communal scream of indignation, communal scream of a nation, communal scream of loss etc.

The primary interface for the Scream-Loop database will be the screamloop.com website which will be used both in the on-site installation and as an online venue. The relevance of having a single virtual venue with multiple physical portals is to bridge physical and temporal distance. A scream could be recorded and uploaded to the screamloop.com site from a location in the Middle East and played back at an installation in the Art in General Project Space in NYC. Inversely, a scream recorded at the installation in the Project Space could be available for download from the website anywhere in the world. The installation will function as the locus of the Scream-Loop project. Since the intent of the project is to build a visceral form of communication, the materialization of the virtual website into a physical installation space where the screams can be recorded and heard among other individuals is essential to the Scream-Loop project.

The Scream-Loop installation could function in a variety of configurations in a single site or in multiple sites. The basic elements of the installation are a recoding chamber and an auditorium room. The screams collected in the recording chamber could be relaid directly to the auditorium, they could be archived or broadcast in a different location.

The first installation will represent the inception of the project. As each scream is archived in the recording chamber it will be added to the others played back in the listening room thus escalating throughout the permanence of the installation from a single scream to a cacophony of screams.
